Cooperatively designed by the UK and Italy and introduced in 1999, the AugustaWestland Merlin is the most technologically sophisticated helicopter currently in Royal Navy service. In its anti-submarine warfare role the Merlin is equipped with a host of sophisticated sensors including sonar, radar, dip buoys, and other powerful searching tools. Once spotted, the Merlin engages submerged submarines with acoustic homing Stingray Torpedoes and depth charges.
